What is Herbal medicine?

Herbal medicine is medicine made from plants, either the whole plant or sometimes parts of it, for example leaves, flowers, roots or bark.  It has been the main source of medicine used by people for thousands of years.  There are many herbal traditions around the world.

Medical herbalists and safety

Medical Herbalists make use of plants whose traditional uses are backed up by modern scientific research and clinical trials. Medical Herbalists have studied orthodox medicine as well as plant medicine and are trained in the same diagnostic skills as a GP. They are able to prescribe herbal remedies to be used alongside other medication and treatments, and many patients are referred to a herbalist by their GP for treatment.

How is a herbalist different from a naturopath?

Medical Herbalist and Naturopath are two distinct types of practitioners, both utilising natural therapies, but they differ in their scope, philosophy, and focus.

Medical herbalists undergo extensive training in anatomy, physiology, pathophysiology, phytochemistry, biochemistry and clinical medicine. Training includes understanding how herbs interact with medications and the body’s physiology.
We utilise our in-depth knowledge of medicinal plants, their pharmacology, and their therapeutic applications to treat both acute and chronic conditions.
We integrate conventional medical understanding with the herbal approach and are skilled in creating personalised herbal prescriptions based on a patient’s medical history, physical examination, and presenting symptoms.

Naturopaths Uses a wide range of therapies, including nutrition, lifestyle changes, herbal medicine, homoeopathy, acupuncture, and physical therapies like hydrotherapy or massage.
A naturopath is a generalist in these areas of holistic healing rather than a specialist.

To summarise, Medical Herbalists are the experts on plant-based medicine. Naturopaths are generalists and use a combination of therapies.
